The River

Well rivers actually as Les Lavandes is just 10kms from Limeuil where the Vézère and Dordogne rivers meet and you can choose which river to ride. Canoeing is great fun for all the family and even non swimmers can enjoy it as in many places the water is only waist height. My personal favourite is from Siorac to Limeuil, stopping off half way at Le Buisson for lunch. About four hours, but after lunch, who cares?

It is recommended that you take a hat or suitable head gear. It feels a lot cooler on the water, but on sunny days you can easily get burnt. Take with you water, sunscreen and a towel.

Kayak and canoe on the Vezere and Dordogne from Montignac to Lascaux. This is one of the largest canoe companies on the rivers, offering eight different trips. From Montignac-Lascaux to Trémolat, Les Eyzies, Le Bugue and Limeuil. The age limit is 5 years and over, under 10's are half price and dogs are welcome.

They drive you upstream in a minibus and you canoe back downstream, or you canoe downstream from the start point and they drive you back. Either way, you only ever canoe with the flow of the river! Both rivers, Vezere and Dordogne, are not very fast rivers.

Gabares Norbert

A Gabare traditionally is a Sailing Barge and one of the best Gabare Companies is Gabares Norbert, who offer boat trips on the Dordogne. Starting at La Roque Gageac, a village featured in the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” (Most Beautiful Villages in France) to the Castelnaud Bridge overlooked by the 18th century castle, this part of the river offers a unique insight into the history of Périgord and its castles.

Motorised replicas of various sailing boats from the 18th and 19th centuries are available, each with 48 places. The trip takes 55 minutes and covers a 6.5km round trip starting from and returning to La Roque-Gageac. Both boats are equipped with audio guides in your language. For groups, the audio guide can be played to the boat as a whole.

Open every day from March 26 to October 31 Departure between 10am and 6pm (Afternoons only in October).
